If you're planning an RV or camping trip with young kids, having a few activities ready to go can make the miles a lot easier.

We wanted something that would keep our 5-year-old entertained without handing him a screen for the whole ride—and something that could be used over and over again on future trips.

So we put together a simple reusable RV activity kit: laminated activity pages, dry-erase markers, and a small cloth, all stored together in a clear velcro seal envelope. We also go with audiobooks, sticker books, and more but this was a great addition.

The best part? Once you make it, you can use the activities again and again.

What You'll Need

You don't need much to make your own reusable activity kit:

Printable activity pages
8.5 × 11-inch laminating pouches
Laminator
Fine-tip dry-erase markers
Small microfiber or dry-erase cloth
Two-pocket folder, binder, or another way to store the pages

Pouches: We have found that 3mil laminator pouches are a good balance of durability and flexible feel for our 5 year old. 1. Print Your Activity Pages

Start by printing your activities on standard 8.5 × 11-inch paper.

For a reusable kit, I recommend printing in color. The activity pages are designed to use color where it adds to the experience while keeping the actual puzzles relatively ink-friendly.

You can print them at home or use a local print shop.

If you're making your own pages, leave a little extra white space around the edges so they're easy to laminate and handle.

2. Laminate the Pages

Once you've printed the pages, laminate each one individually. Be sure to line up the page with a slight margin from the pouch seam so that all the margins will be equal when you’re done. If you’re particular like us, then you won’t have to trim off some later so the asymmetry doesn’t drive you nuts.

Laminated pages are what turns an ordinary printable into something you can use repeatedly.

After laminating, the pages can be used with a dry-erase marker for activities.

This is what we’ve tested in our truck and has worked well for us.

3. Add Dry-Erase Markers

A couple of ultra-fine-tip dry-erase markers are ideal for these activities.

Fine tips make it easier for little hands to trace maze paths, circle objects, write numbers, and complete smaller puzzles.

We recommend keeping the markers with the activity pages rather than loose in the RV or car. The velcro sealed envelope we use works well.

4. Keep a Small Cloth With the Kit

You'll also want something to erase the pages.

A small microfiber cloth works great and takes up almost no room.

Keep it with the markers so everything you need is in one place.

Then the routine is simple:

Play → Wipe → Put Away → Repeat

5. Put Everything in an Envelope

For road trips, we like something that can contain the activities and supplies. The envelope doesn't need to be fancy. Its main job is to keep the pages together and give you a place to store the markers and cloth.

You can also use a three-ring binder if you prefer, but we found that individual laminated sheets are especially convenient for a young child in a car seat.

A single page can come out, sit on a child's lap, and go right back into the folder when they're finished.

6. Take It on the Road!

Now you have a little activity kit that's ready whenever you need it.

It works particularly well for:
